Beable Education Partners with San Francisco Organizations to Launch Career-Connected Literacy Initiative for Underserved Youth
- San Francisco, CA — March 2026
Beable Education has joined with Urban Angels SF, Operation Genesis, and SoMa Rotary to accelerate literacy growth and connect reading proficiency to real-world career pathways for underserved youth.
The initiative comes at a critical moment. In neighborhoods such as Bayview–Hunters Point, only one in four students are reading at proficiency level, creating long-term barriers to academic success and workforce participation. Students served through Operation Genesis and Urban Angels include youth facing economic instability, housing insecurity, and limited access to structured literacy support—including children living in transitional housing and shelters across San Francisco.
The initiative will begin implementation at Urban Angels and Operation Genesis sites, extending into summer programming and community-based learning environments. Students will engage with Beable’s literacy and career-connected platform a minimum of two times per week, with participation and progress tracked to ensure consistent engagement.
Beable’s platform is designed to accelerate literacy growth while helping students connect reading to their future. Research and implementation results have shown that students using Beable can improve literacy skills at up to five times the rate of traditional instruction alone with two times per week engagement with the platform.
“Literacy is the ultimate durable skill,” said Saki Dodelson, Founder and CEO of Beable Education. “When students see how reading connects to real careers—whether in the trades, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, or professional fields—their motivation shifts. We are committed to ensuring that all students, especially those who have historically been underserved, have access to tools that accelerate growth and expand opportunity.”
For Urban Angels, the impact is deeply personal.
“We work with children and families living in shelters and transitional housing,” said Nelson Barry III of Urban Angels SF. “For many of these students, stability is not guaranteed. When a child struggles to read, it compounds everything else they’re facing. This initiative gives them something powerful: the ability to build confidence, strengthen their skills, and the belief that they have agency to change their futures. Connecting literacy with careers changes what a child believes is possible.”
At Operation Genesis, the stakes are equally high.
“Many of our youth are growing up in environments where the odds are stacked against them,” said JJ Johnson of Operation Genesis. “They’re coming from communities where opportunity isn’t always visible. When a student can read confidently and begin to connect that skill to real careers and real income, it changes the trajectory of their life. This partnership gives our kids a real shot at graduating and thriving in the future.”
As part of the pilot, Beable is donating platform access and professional development support for a 12-month period to participating organizations. The initiative begins with a full-day professional development convening for educators, counselors, and community leaders to align around implementation standards, engagement expectations, and measurable outcomes.
Beyond improving reading proficiency, the initiative integrates career exploration content to help students understand how literacy connects to employment, entrepreneurship, and long-term economic mobility. By pairing technology-enabled engagement with community-based support, the partnership aims to demonstrate that coordinated action can produce measurable impact for San Francisco youth.
The San Francisco Career-Connected Literacy & Pathways Initiative represents a collaborative model, one that combines trusted community relationships, structured professional development, and accountable implementation standards to ensure that students not only improve their reading skills, but gain clarity and confidence about how they will apply those skills in their futures.
